Golf Pro's Report

September is here and boy is it a busy month. The LLGA Invitational, The Julian, Ryder Cup, Table Rock Chamber and Men’s Member Guest are just a few of the events we are hosting this month. The LLGA Invitational is full. The Julian is full in the afternoon, but there are some team spots open in the morning. We also have tickets available to the Sunday night auction and Million Dollar Shoot-Out on Sunday the 14th. The Julian is managed entirely by volunteers. We could not do it without the support of the community, our volunteers, donors, golfers and sponsors. We need volunteers for the auction on Sunday and for golf spotters on Monday. All funds raised by the tournament and the auction will go to support the Jeff Julian and Friends ALS Foundation. To sign up for the event, to volunteer, or to get tickets for the charity auction, please contact Bill Hasler, Gae Redford, Kathy Powelson or Chris Vinton. The Ryder Cup event is open to owners and guests of owners at StoneBridge Village. It is a unique format. You can sign up as two person teams. There is a men’s and a women’s division. Pick up a flier today in the pro shop. The entry fee for this event is $20.00 plus any applicable green fee. The Men’s Member Guest has changed a little this year. The format will stay the same, but we are allowing member/member teams this year in attempt to fill up the field. Also this year all players, regardless of skill level, will hit from the white tees.

The Club Championship will be held on October 4th and 5th. This will be a tee time event. Times are available in the pro shop. There will be 4 divisions for the Club Championship. The divisions are as follows: Open Division (Blue Tees), Senior Division (White Tees), Super Senior Division (Green Tees) and Ladies Division (Red Tees). You may play in any division that you qualify for; however, you must play from the specified tees for the division you choose. The open division is for any and all competitors who wish to compete from the Blue Tees. The Senior Division is for men age 55 and older, the Super Senior Division is for men age 75 and older and the Ladies Division is for all women.

This is a busy month, so don’t let any of these fine events pass you by.

Rule Quiz:
Which of the following is not defined by white stakes or lines?

  1. Ball Drop Area
  2. Out of Bounds
  3. Lateral Water Hazard
  4. Ground Under Repair

Answer below

Golf Definitions:

Chip Shot – A short approach shot of low trajectory usually hit from near the green. It is normally hit with overspin or bite.

Bite – The backspin imparted on the ball that makes the ball stop dead, or almost so, with little or no roll.

Proper course care can go a long way to help make a normal golf course a premier golf course. Repairing ball marks, filling in divots with sand and parking your golf cart at least thirty feet from the green are all little ways to enhance our beautiful facility. For example; it may be easier to park your cart just off of the back side of number two green rather than walk from the cart path, but think about what that does to the grass and the appearance of the hole. Please use good judgment while on the course and park your carts at least 30 feet from all greens. Many golfers rely on the golf cart’s GPS unit to keep them from making these mistakes, please don’t. I think the members of LedgeStone Country Club are far more reliable than the GPS systems are capable of being.

GENERAL MANAGER'S REPORT

Garden Committee – The several active members of the Garden Committee, along with many other residents, joined forces sometime ago to create Heritage Garden. They built the pergola, contributed plants, bushes, mulch and added irrigation to create a restful oasis. As with any garden, maintenance and enhancing the garden is continuous and there is always something to be done.

There are a number of other areas in StoneBridge that the Garden Committee may improve. Planting and maintenance of beds in the center of cul-de-sacs at the end of LedgeStone Lane, SilverCliff Way and SilverOak Way are examples of spaces that are available. If you are interested in gardening or would like to help, more hands are always welcome. There are many rewards to this hobby. Making friends, developing relationships, enjoying the outdoors, exercise and learning about techniques for all aspects of gardening is only part of the fun. The added pleasure of seeing the results is a well earned bonus. Contact Barb Orle, call the POA office or any member of the Advisory Committee if you are interested in the Garden Committee.
There is an article on Jonquils in this newsletter and we encourage all residents to participate in this project to provide an early spring show of color in StoneBridge this next spring. The Beautification Committee is offering quality Jonquil bulbs at a reasonable price. Jonquils bloom very early in the spring, are very hardy and require little care.

Jeff Julian Golf Tournament - With so many great golf events on the September schedule, there will be no lack of opportunity for golf at LedgeStone. From the Labor Day Scramble to the LLGA Invitational to the Table Rock Chamber Tournament and of course, the Member Guest, the course will be a “swinging” place this month. In the midst of all the events penciled in on your calendar, there is one more that’s worth writing “in ink” this month – “The Julian.” Each year LedgeStone Golf Course has the privilege and opportunity to host this tournament. It is our privilege to remember and learn from the example and achievements of Jeff Julian; our opportunity to strike a blow at the devastating disease that took his life. Jeff’s character, tenacity and hard work should inspire all of us to take the step beyond just enjoying the game to making a difference. This September 14 and 15, hit the course, play a great game, be a volunteer, participate in the auction and make a big difference. The following brief summary tells of the work that continues in the name of Jeff.

“Although Jeff is no longer with us, his legacy of hope, hard work and love of golf continues to permeate the lives and hearts of those that knew him, or knew of him. Nothing came easy for this young man, every notable accomplishment in his brief life seemed to be hitched to the yoke of constant struggle. But, struggle he did…all the way to the big dance…twice! Then, as he was poised at the top of his sport and had just married the love of his life, he came face to face with an adversary that could not be beaten by hard work or determination.

This adversary, ALS, took his speech, his sport, his body, and eventually his life. Jeff’s spirit, the one thing ALS could not take, is the integral part of “The Julian,” the golf tournament that bears his name and raises much needed funds to fight the scourge that beat Jeff. ALS, often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” is a ruthless killer that slowly robs the body of movement, bit by agonizing bit until there is nothing left. Funds raised by The Julian, as well as personal contributions, are funneled directly to local patient care and “Driving for Life,” a campaign founded by Jeff and his wife Kim, Tom and Hillary Watson and Bruce and Marsha Edwards. This campaign funds vital work at the ALS-TDF Bio Tech Research Lab in Cambridge, MA, the only ALS specific research lab in the country.

Many of us look for ways to make a difference during our lives. The Julian is an excellent opportunity to participate in the game Jeff loved while striking a blow at the horrible disease that took him from us. Put a team together and join us in making a difference in the lives of ALS patients in southwest Missouri.”

Golf Committee’s Report

The Golf Committee met on August 14, 2008, and the following topics were discussed.

  • The golf rounds, pro shop revenues, expenses and golf course maintenance reports were presented and discussed. Many factors have reduced our golf rounds played and revenues.
  • Bill Hasler, Golf Pro, presented a letter to him from Golf Digest.  LedgeStone Golf Course has been given a 4 Star rating by Golf Digest and will be advertised in their 2008-2009 publications as, “Golf Digest Best Places to Play Golf.”
  • There is an approved golf cart and golf cart colors sheet in the pro shop.  This will be enforced.
  • There have been unauthorized carts and unauthorized use of our cart paths.  This is being investigated.
  • Jeff Julian tickets - $25 per person for the auction on Sunday, September 14th available in the pro shop.
  • New tournament schedules are available in the pro shop.
  • Jim Pyle, Golf Course Superintendent, is addressing the diseased areas of some of our greens with a product to help heal the greens.  Jim is gathering information about fans for #15 green where the air circulation is poor.
  • Winter work for our course will include the tee boxes.
  • There have been numerous reports of players not adhering to golf course rules concerning the distance a cart can be driven near a green.  A cart should be at least 30 feet from all greens.  Please respect our course by using the cart paths around the greens.

ACC NEWS

The intent of the Architectural Control Committee (ACC) is to provide a framework to insure the design philosophy is achieved and maintained in all areas of the Village.  The ACC Guidelines are intended to protect the impact of development, so the natural setting is preserved.

With this in mind, we need the cooperation of the homeowners to fulfill our duties.  If you are updating, making changes or additions to your property by changing your landscaping, changing the exterior color and/or siding, making a change in roofing materials and/or colors and adding fences and/or walls, you will need to notify the POA office and be added to the agenda for one of two monthly ACC meetings.  You are asked to submit a plan and samples of the material and colors to be used.

In the event an issue needs immediate attention, call the POA office or an ACC member.

Jonquils

Amidst rolling hills, quiet streams, beautiful trees and a picturesque golf course, StoneBridge Village is a lovely place.  Now, imagine driving through the village next spring as the trees are budding, the grass is starting to green and you’re greeted with bursts of bright yellow color throughout the landscape. A spectacular spring show of Jonquils dancing in the breeze in your own yard!

The StoneBridge Beautification Committee would like to help you enhance the beauty of our community by offering Jonquil bulbs at wholesale price to Village residents for use in your landscaped areas.  Additional bulbs will be purchased by the committee to be planted in the common areas around the community.  Just picture the excitement these golden flowers will add to StoneBridge next spring!

Think you can’t have these lovely plants without a lot of time and effort? Not true, these bulbs are easy to plant, easy to maintain and come back every year on their own.  Simply plant the bulbs 4” – 5” deep in groups 3 or more anytime between late September and early December for brilliant spring color.  Maintenance of your plants consists of just clipping the faded flowers and allowing the stalk and leaves to remain until wilted. Easy planting, easy maintenance, and a lifetime of beautiful blooms!

The Beautification Committee is charging just $ .45 per bulb, that’s 25 bulbs for only $11.25.  Volunteers will be calling to take your order, but you may also place your order now by calling Carol Gerhart at 335-4414.  Get ready to spring into 2009 with some great new curb appeal!

CONGRATULATIONS to Glenda McLauchlin, winner of the naming our banquet facility.  We appreciate all the entries that we received and it was a tough decision.  The winning names are Creek Room, Forest Room (middle room) and Lake Room (room closest to the driving range) and the whole facility is the StoneBridge Ballroom.

Again thank you to all of you who participated.

The Lodges on Roark Creek

In various locations throughout the lodges, are grinders that move waste matter into the sewer system. Along the creek side of Lost Creek Circle, the grinders are located in-between the lodges and toward the rear. They are easily identified by a very large manhole type cover and an electrical control panel mounted on a 4X4 post.

When I arrived at my lodge in the evening during the week of July 21, I detected the unmistakable odor of raw sewage. Several renters from lodges 4 and 6 were standing next to my mailbox and asked me if the odor was emanating from the trash enclosure on Forest Lake Drive. I assured them that the bad odor was different. After they returned to their lodges, I inspected the area where the grinder pump is located. The large manhole size lid broke loose and was floating on top of the sewage that was overflowing toward Roark Creek.

I called the security guard and he recommended I contact White River Electric (WRE)/Roark Water and Sewer, which I did. Within 30 minutes, two trucks arrived and the sewage was pumped into a tank truck and temporary repairs were made, followed by additional repair work the next day.  It was dark when the WRE trucks departed and I did not talk to the workers. During a visual inspection, the following day, I could not determine if any sewage entered the creek. I also do not know how long the condition existed before we contacted WRE. Therefore, I do not know the length of time the sewage was exiting the manhole.

Many children play in the playground adjacent to the bridge, often times frolic in the water. Many of the renters, both adults and children, walk in the creek alongside the 9th fairway in search of golf balls and it’s not unusual to see them sitting on a rock and bathing their feet in the flowing water. It’s also not uncommon to see a golfer remove his/her shoes and enter the water to retrieve a golf ball. There is the possibility that the water in our beautiful creek may be polluted particularly when the water is not flowing.

Lodge owners, community residents, golfers, golf course maintenance workers, real estate personnel, lodge cleaners, rental agents, security guards, please take notice. Watch for the red light flashing and listen for the audible alarm that warns of a possible overflow of the grinder pump tank.  If you detect a sewage odor when walking, driving, working or riding your golf cart in the area of the lodges or anywhere in StoneBridge Village, I PLEAD with you to PLEASE call White River Electric/Roark Water and Sewer (same phone number) immediately. Their prompt response to my call prevented what may have been a serious environmental problem in addition to a potential health hazard. I suspect that White River Electric would rather inspect a false alarm than have sewage enter our beautiful Roark Creek.

Donald Capuano Owner/Resident/Lodge #5.
